Born Too Soon : #5 - Lewis Carroll

Today we feature the creepiest uncle of them all - Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known to posterity as Lewis Carroll.

Picture a shy, third rate academic filling the long, lonely hours between lectures sitting in his cramped, windowless office surfing /b/. Occasionally he makes a sparklingly witty post or clever pun which is instantly buried under the deluge of stale copypasta. But the threads that really bring him to life, the ones that keep bringing him back to the site are those that involve "loli" - Japanese "Lolita complex" cartoons of young girls in provocative poses.

Thankfully, the internet wasn't around in the 1850s and Dodgson spent his time far more productively writing Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass. Not so creditably, he also spent his time experimenting with the new medium of photography; taking photographs of very young girls that make modern viewers cringe.

An older, wiser Alice.

If our more cynical readers would like a good laugh, we recommend that they visit Jimmy Wales' blog and read the section on the 'Carroll Myth' where Dodgson's apologists try to argue that his tastes were "a response to a prevalent aesthetic and philosophical movement of the time."

...And Bush wasn't really stupid and Obama isn't really incompetent.

  3. Alice is honestly one of the most unreadable, ADHD, pieces of shit in appreciated literary history. And this is coming from two guys who are rewriting a version of it...

  6. I guess that is a mildly creepy hobby. It could be worse. I know because I have internet access.

  7. Perhaps he wasn't born too soon, perhaps he was born at precisely the right time, a time when it was socially acceptable to have relations with wee ones. Either way, I'm in love with your name.

  10. He just had an appreciation of the female form and enjoyed exploring themes of innocence vs experience. And he was a perv.

  14. @ JRam : I've decided that the name wikipedia makes it sound to much like an encyclopædia. "Jimmy Wales' blog" seems closer to the truth on anything remotely contentious.

  15. Aside from being majorly creepy, I never cared for his books. With the exception of his book on logic. That was kind of interesting.

  18. Didn't he make up the story off the top of his head when he was trying to impress a little girl?

How does that stack up to the Never Land ranch in terms of pedobait?
