All I am, or can hope to be, I owe to Shoop

One of the first American shoops - Lincoln's head on John Calhoun's body.
Calhoun died in 1850 and his image was recycled for the famous Lincoln print.
(A bit like putting MLK's head on Strom Thurmond's body.)

Small-Print Tutorial - Getting Rid of Stalkers

As promised, today we're going to give a step-by-step example of removing an unwanted figure from an image. Suciô has never liked to follow the herd, so we'll be removing a walking Leonardo DiCaprio from an image. We'll be replacing his slightly sinister figure with a friendly cartoon bear.

Save and edit in GIMP the image of the young girl and Leo to the left.

Also save and edit this lovable cartoon bear exploitable. (Note that the bear picture is in .png format. If we'd saved it as a .jpg the transparency information would be lost.)

In the Leo image, create a new, transparent layer (<Layer><New Layer> or Shift+Ctrl+N). In the Bear image copy (<Edit><Copy> or Ctrl+C). Then, paste back in the Leo image (<Edit><Paste> or Ctrl+V).
We'll need to flip the bear so he faces the girl (<Tools><Transform Tools><Flip> or Shift+F and click on either side of the image). Use Move (<Tools><Transform Tools><Move> or M) and Scale (<Tools><Transform Tools><Scale> or Shift+T) to postion the bear so he covers most of Leo. Anchor the bear when you're happy.

You should now have something like this - with bits of Leo sticking out from behind the bear.

Make sure you have the original "Background" layer of the Leo image selected (not the new transparent bear layer). Use the Rectangle or Free Select Tool to copy a part of the pavement and paste it over Leo's leg. Note how I lined up the lines of sunlight.

Do the same for the other leg. Then use the free select tool to copy a piece of the top of the fence to paste over Leo's head. (Try to line up the loops.)

To finish off, use the smudge tool to blend in any square edges to the pasted areas that show up.

If you wanted to be really flash you could use the Burn Tool (<Tools><Paint Tools><Dodge/Burn>) to darken the pavement under the bear's paws to look like shadows.

Tada! The young girl is safe from the predatory Leo.

  4. Ellen Page does look like a small child in that picture so I can see where the "friendly cartoon bear" might be attracted to her! =P

  6. If Pedobear was that large, I think he'd win every time.

  7. If pedobear is a bear, then pedobear would probably be about that big.

  8. Leo DiCaprio looks pretty creepy in that picture. Frankly, I'd prefer to be chased by Pedobear.

  23. I have a problem with this -
That girl is much too old, the bear would not be following her.

  24. i bet the bear would have shared leo's goal of returning to his children.
